Job Description – Consultant Cardiac Anaesthesiologist

Job Title: Consultant – Cardiac Anaesthesiology

Reporting To: Head of Department – Cardiac Anaesthesia / Medical Director

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed pre-operative evaluation and risk stratification of cardiac surgical patients.

  • Develop individualized anaesthesia plans for complex cardiac and cardiothoracic procedures.

  • Administer and manage anaesthesia for:

    • CABG

    • Valve replacement and repair

    • Congenital cardiac surgery

    • Aortic surgery

    • Thoracic procedures

    • Major vascular procedures

    • Minimally invasive and complex cardiac procedures

  • Provide anaesthesia for interventional cardiology and electrophysiology procedures, where applicable.

  • Perform and interpret advanced haemodynamic monitoring, including invasive arterial and central venous monitoring.

  • Manage TEE (Transesophageal Echocardiography) peri-operatively, where qualified.

  • Manage patients requiring inotropic and vasoactive support.

  • Participate in initiation and management of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in coordination with the perfusion and surgical teams.

  • Manage peri-operative complications including haemodynamic instability, arrhythmias, bleeding, coagulopathy and difficult airway.

  • Provide peri-operative care for high-risk and critically ill cardiac patients.

  • Participate in cardiac surgical ICU management, including post-operative ventilation, haemodynamic support and early recovery.

  • Manage post-operative pain and facilitate enhanced recovery where appropriate.

  • Participate in emergency cardiac procedures and resuscitation.

  • Work closely with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists and nursing teams.

  • Maintain accurate anaesthesia records and clinical documentation.

  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, clinical protocols, infection-control standards and patient-safety practices.

  • Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, quality-improvement initiatives and CME programmes.

  • Guide and train junior consultants, fellows, residents and anaesthesia technicians as applicable.
