Job Summary

The Junior Consultant – Adult Hematology is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with benign and malignant hematological disorders in adults. The role includes inpatient and outpatient care, participation in multidisciplinary meetings, procedural responsibilities, and contribution to academic and clinical excellence within the department.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and manage adult patients with hematological disorders including:
    • Anemias
    • Thrombocytopenia
    • Coagulation disorders
    • Leukemias
    • Lymphomas
    • Multiple myeloma
    • Myeloproliferative disorders
  • Conduct outpatient clinics and inpatient rounds.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans and monitor response to therapy.
  • Interpret hematology laboratory investigations and bone marrow reports.
  • Manage chemotherapy protocols and transfusion support where applicable.
  • Handle hematology emergencies such as:
    • Febrile neutropenia
    • Tumor lysis syndrome
    • DIC
    • Acute leukostasis

Procedures

  • Perform:
    • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
    • Lumbar puncture (if required)
    • Central line care/related procedures
  • Ensure adherence to infection control and patient safety protocols.

Academic & Research

  • Participate in CMEs, tumor boards, journal clubs, and departmental teaching.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, research activities, and publications.
  • Guide junior residents/medical officers where applicable.

Coordination & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate patient documentation and EMR records.
  • Coordinate with pathology, oncology, transfusion medicine, ICU, and radiation oncology teams.
  • Counsel patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, risks, and prognosis.
