Job Summary

The Senior Resident in Emergency Medicine is responsible for providing high-quality emergency medical care to patients presenting with acute illnesses, trauma, and life-threatening conditions. The role includes patient assessment, stabilization, emergency procedures, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, supervision of junior doctors, and participation in academic and quality improvement activities. Responsibilities typically include rapid assessment, resuscitation, triage, emergency procedures, patient management, and teamwork under consultant supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Assess, triage, stabilize, and manage patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Perform comprehensive history taking and physical examinations.
  • Initiate appropriate investigations and interpret laboratory and radiological findings.
  • Manage medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetric, and trauma emergencies.
  • Perform emergency procedures including:
    • Endotracheal intubation
    • CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support
    • Central venous catheterization
    • Arterial line insertion
    • Chest tube insertion
    • Wound suturing and minor surgical procedures
    • Defibrillation and cardioversion
    • Splinting and fracture stabilization
  • Provide emergency life-saving interventions according to established protocols.
  • Ensure timely referral and coordination with specialty departments.
  • Maintain complete and accurate medical documentation.

Patient Care

  • Monitor critically ill patients until admission, transfer, or discharge.
  • Counsel patients and relatives regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and prognosis.
  • Ensure patient safety and infection prevention practices.

Academic Responsibilities

  • Participate in departmental teaching programs, CMEs, journal clubs, and case presentations.
  • Supervise and guide junior residents, interns, and nursing staff.
  • Participate in research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate electronic and manual medical records.
  • Ensure compliance with NABH, NMC, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and clinical governance activities.
  • Report adverse events and sentinel incidents as per hospital protocols.
