Job Title: Senior Resident – Pulmonology
Department: Pulmonology / Respiratory Medicine
Reports To: Head of Department / Consultant Pulmonologist

Job Summary

The Senior Resident – Pulmonology is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical care to patients with respiratory disorders under the supervision of consultants. The role involves assessment, diagnosis, management of respiratory conditions, assisting in procedures, emergency care, teaching, and participation in academic and quality improvement activities while ensuring high standards of patient safety and care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with respiratory diseases including asthma, COPD, pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary infections, sleep disorders, and other pulmonary conditions.
  • Provide inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and critical care support for respiratory patients.
  • Conduct clinical assessments, develop treatment plans, and monitor patient progress under consultant guidance.
  • Assist and perform respiratory procedures as per competency and departmental protocols, including bronchoscopy, pleural procedures, pulmonary function tests, and other diagnostic interventions.
  • Manage respiratory emergencies including acute respiratory failure, asthma/COPD exacerbations, and other critical respiratory conditions.
  • Monitor patients requiring oxygen therapy, non-invasive ventilation (NIV), and other respiratory support.
  • Participate in daily ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary discussions.
  • Interpret relevant investigations including chest X-rays, CT scans, pulmonary function tests, ABG analysis, and laboratory reports.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, procedure notes, discharge summaries, and clinical documentation.
  • Counsel patients and families regarding disease management, treatment plans, and preventive care.
  • Coordinate patient care with intensive care, radiology, microbiology, and other specialties.
  • Supervise and guide junior residents, interns, and medical students.
  • Participate in academic activities including case presentations, journal clubs, CMEs, seminars, and teaching sessions.
  • Assist in clinical audits, research projects, quality improvement initiatives, and accreditation activities.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection control practices, patient safety standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Perform rotational duties, including night shifts, emergency duties, and on-call responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • MD/DNB in Pulmonary Medicine / Respiratory Medicine from a recognized institution.
  • Valid Medical Council registration.
  • Additional training or experience in critical care, bronchoscopy, or sleep medicine is desirable.

Experience

  • Experience in managing respiratory and critical care patients is preferred.
  • Experience with pulmonary procedures and respiratory support systems is desirable.
