Job Summary
The Senior Resident in Obstetrics & Gynecology is responsible for providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to women, managing obstetric and gynecological emergencies, assisting and performing surgeries, supervising junior residents and interns, participating in academic activities, and ensuring high standards of patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose, and manage obstetric and gynecological patients.
- Conduct antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
- Manage labor room activities and obstetric emergencies.
- Perform normal vaginal deliveries independently.
- Assist and perform cesarean sections and gynecological surgeries as per competency.
- Manage gynecological OPD and emergency cases.
- Provide family planning and reproductive health services.
- Counsel patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care.
Emergency Duties
- Manage obstetric emergencies such as:
- Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)
- Eclampsia
- Shoulder dystocia
- Obstructed labor
- Sepsis
- Manage gynecological emergencies including:
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Ovarian torsion
- Acute pelvic pain
- Heavy uterine bleeding
Surgical Responsibilities
- Perform or assist in:
- Cesarean section
- Hysterectomy
- Dilation and Curettage (D&C)
- Dilatation and Evacuation (D&E)
- Tubectomy
- Laparotomy
- Basic laparoscopic procedures (based on institutional policy and competence)
Academic Responsibilities
- Teach and supervise junior residents, interns, and undergraduate students.
- Present seminars, journal clubs, mortality meetings, and case discussions.
- Participate in departmental CMEs, audits, and research activities.
- Assist in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate medical records and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and infection control protocols.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate with nursing staff and other specialties for multidisciplinary care.
