Senior Resident – Adult Critical Care Services

1. Job Summary

The Senior Resident – Adult Critical Care Services will provide comprehensive clinical care to critically ill adult patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The role involves assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, emergency management, procedural interventions, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams under the supervision of Critical Care Consultants.

2. Key Responsibilities

• Provide 24-hour clinical care to critically ill adult patients as per assigned shifts.
• Conduct initial assessment and ongoing reassessment of ICU patients.
• Develop and implement patient management plans in consultation with the treating Consultant.
• Monitor and manage patients requiring mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, and other organ-support therapies.
• Manage critically ill patients with sepsis, septic shock, respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, cardiovascular emergencies, neurological emergencies, and multi-organ dysfunction.
• Perform and assist with critical-care procedures, including:
  • Endotracheal intubation and airway management
  • Central venous and arterial catheterization
  • Pleural procedures where appropriately trained and authorized
  • Bedside ultrasound and other ICU procedures as per competency
• Interpret ABGs, ECGs, laboratory investigations, imaging, and hemodynamic parameters.
• Participate in ICU rounds, handovers, multidisciplinary meetings, and family counselling.
• Respond promptly to medical emergencies, cardiac arrests, and acute deterioration of patients.
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation of clinical assessments, treatment plans, procedures, and progress notes.
• Coordinate with specialists, nursing staff, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
• Ensure adherence to infection-control practices, patient-safety protocols, antimicrobial stewardship, and hospital policies.
• Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, quality-improvement initiatives, and departmental meetings.
• Assist in teaching and supervision of junior residents, interns, and other clinical trainees.
• Maintain professional communication with patients' relatives and provide appropriate updates under Consultant guidance.
• Ensure appropriate and timely escalation of care to the Consultant when clinically indicated.
