Job Purpose:

Sterilizing Services Unit has a commitment in delivering excellent quality service and engendering towards best practices.

Job Responsibilities:

                           Clinical Practice: 

  • Ensures CSSD activities are within established hospital, divisional and department specific guidelines, policies and procedures, international standards and protocols, etc, Maintain high visibility and monitors the sterilization process of equipment, instruments and supplies to ensure quality product and patient outcomes. 
  • Ensures the implementation and monitoring of CSSD standards and process practice. 
  • Provides leadership and resource role in the operations of the CSSD. 
  • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills when interacting with patients/families, other health care team members and members of other departments. 
  • Complies with hospital infection control and safety protocols. 

    Administration: 
  • Staff Management to include recruitment, education, training, evaluation and development, as well as preparation and delegation of work schedules and workflow. 
  • Reviews, plans, manages and monitors the unit budget. 
  • Participates in Committees and work groups as required. 
  • Develops and implements unit level strategic plan in line with Nursing Services strategic plans. 
  • Manages the equipment and supply exchange program fro CSSD operations with the Central Region. 
  • Provides consultation, coordination and collaboration related to CSSD project development and expansion. 
  • Conducts staff meetings and maintains minutes. 
  • Maintains all records pertaining to the operation of the area of assignment and generates reports as required. 

    Education and Research: 
  • Directs employee orientation and evaluates staff performance on an ongoing basis. 
  • Assists staff in developing problem-solving and decision-making skills. 
  • Ensures learning needs of staff are met. 
  • Participate in teaching and mentorship of student and graduate nurses. 

    Quality:
  • Ensures that internationally accepted standards and quality monitoring of CSSD processes are implemented and evaluated. 
  • Implements improvements in CSSD processes as indicated to ensure quality product and patient outcomes. 
  • Monitors and ensures preventive maintenance of CSSD equipment. 
  • Initiates and maintains records and statistics associated with quality monitoring. 
  • Develops, implements and participates in Quality improvement processes and activities

Candidate Requirements:

  • Demonstrate competence in all aspects of the CSS Department includes setting-up, loan instrument, and other equipment.
  • Capable of assisting with the supervision and training of SSU staff.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  •  Team player and flexible.
  • Sound organizational skills and capable of prioritizing work and exercising discretion within established policies, guidelines and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ongoing education and clinical development.
  •  Able to work either individually or in a team.
  • Responsible for work performed with a high degree level of accountability.
  • Able to work within SSU routines, methods and procedures as required.
  • Willing to participate in on the job training and/or specific skills training as required.
  • Ability to use computerized information systems and willingness to teach others.
