Job Purpose:

Responsible for giving specialized care to children, babies, and adolescents in the ICU. Pediatric nurses must treat and care for children with life-threatening injuries.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The duties required of a pediatric nurse in ICU include treating and educating patients about medical conditions and treatments, establishing care plans specialized for each patient, observing patients on a regular basis, and consulting with physicians and other health care professionals regarding each patient's condition.
  • They are responsible for administering medication, starting and maintaining intravenous fluids, and checking to make sure doses are correct for each patient's medical needs.
  • Pediatric nurses in ICU deliver immunizations, perform in-depth physical assessments, order medications, perform therapeutic treatments, conduct routine developmental screenings, and care for children who are acutely, chronically, and critically ill.
  • They are also responsible for interpreting the results of laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • The short term responsibilities of a pediatric nurse include taking blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate and heart rate, collecting samples of urine and stools for lab tests, supervising patients and monitoring them for irregularities or new symptoms, and keeping patient records.
  • They must also notify doctors and other health care professionals of any changes in the patient's progress or condition. Pediatric nurses in small, private offices may assist physicians by obtaining pertinent medical histories from patients and their parents.
  • BLS and ACLS trained.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Pediatric nurses should be compassionate, caring, detail oriented, responsible, and sympathetic to care for ill children. They must interact with children of all ages throughout the day.
  • Pediatric nurses direct and supervise others, correctly and accurately assess patients' conditions, and determine whether a consultation from another physician or health care professional is needed.
  • Pediatric nurses should be emotionally stable since they have to deal with suffering children and babies, different types of stress, and emergencies.
